Ruth Attig, a special education classroom aide in Murphysboro Middle School, at Tennessee went into the school first on Friday to observe employees of Phoenix Modular Elevator and Fager-McGee Commercial Construction set up a brand new elevator at the college.
"I only wanted to watch them do it if I have to make use of the elevators this year," Attig stated.
Attig, who has been employed in the area for 31 years and been at the middle school as 1993, have been stuck in the older elevator with a student many times.
Allison Allgaier, president of Phoenix Modular Elevator, said the elevator has been assembled in Mount Vernon. The shaft and elevator parts are pre fabricated.
"We make sure they are there and ship them all over the nation and Canada. This one is in our own backyard," Allgaier said.
Many times, elevators created by Phoenix Modular are all installed on the surface of buildings. The lift at the school is entirely in the building.
Lynndi Kesler, sales manager at Phoenix Modular Elevator, said that the elevator has been assembled of tube steel and conventional drywall. It weighs roughly 25,000 pounds.
"It has assembled no different than the usual stick-built elevator," stated John Holmes, quality control manager.
The rotating shaft and lift assembly has been loaded onto a flatbed truck and caused by Murphysboro Friday morning.
Since rain storms were expected Thursday day , workers from Fager-McGee slice the gap in the faculty ceiling Friday morning, according to Yeyo Granados, vice president of construction for Fager-McGee. They delivered a representative to Phoenix Modular Elevator earlier in the day in the week to take measurements of their elevator. (The rest of the openings to the shaft were cut previously.)
After the truck with all the elevator came, two cranes picked up the assembly, turned it upright and put down it on the ground while straps by the more compact crane were removed. The larger crane picked the elevator up and gradually lower it through three floors.
The hydraulics and electrical wiring will be installed, and then a elevator will be tested and scrutinized.
"We're simply happy the rain ceased," Allgaier said.
Chris Grode, superintendent of Murphysboro Community Unit School District 186, in
